Getting Young Children Involved at Your House (Without Non-Stop Asking and Bribing)

Empowering Your Kids to Care for Your Home

    Hey there, amazing parents!

Remember our recent blog where we dove into the** Home Pillar**? We talked about the importance of creating a happy, loving home environment, and how to prioritize caring for your home to shift your energy, joy, and happiness.

Because when you think of your home as your sacred space and the foundation of your family's daily life, *there’s a shift that happens. *

A truly happy home isn’t defined by its physical structure it's about the love, care, and intentionality you add to it every single day.

So today, we're focusing on something super important:* involving your younger children in making your home a loving place.*** **As a mom of four, I’ve seen firsthand how supporting your kids to see the way they treat their spaces and belongings from a young age can transform lives for the better.

Involving your kids in household tasks isn’t so they can get things done the bigger purpose is to instill values. And you can do this by teaching them to appreciate what they have and caring for their home and what fills it. When they see the why behind this, they learn responsibility and gain a sense of accomplishment and will be motivated to care for their home.

Helping Kids Notice and Nurture Their Space

    Picture this…

**Scenario 1: **A little boy is jumping on the couch with a water bottle and yogurt pouch in his hand. You’re trying to cook dinner you keep stepping on endless toys tossed all over the kitchen floor and you’ve got one eye on the pot that’s on the stove, and one eye on your jumping toddler. You just want him to be careful and to not spill his food all over the couch, again. You exhale, ready to ask for what feels like the fiftieth time, “Can you please eat your snack while you’re sitting down? I want you to be safe and to make sure nothing gets on the cushions.” You wonder if you’re talking to the wall.

**Scenario 2: **A little boy is having his snack, a water bottle and yogurt pouch, while sitting on the couch. His new favorite hobby? Jumping on the cushions while you cook dinner. Your favorite playlist is on, you’re stirring something on the stove, and watching your son. After he finishes his snack, you look over and see he’s coming past you to throw away his trash and place his water bottle on the counter. He goes back to the couch and jumps for a few minutes while you keep cooking. When he’s done, he fluffs the cushions back and puts the pillows on the couch and says, “I want to make sure our couch feels happy after letting me have my snack and play on it!”

If scenario one feels too familiar and you’re longing for a change, let’s fix this! Because if the day to day in your home is exhausting and you just wish your kids would be a little more mindful, you don’t have to stay in this place that feels out of alignment.

And something I know to be true? Young children love to help! They* want* to be a part of the processes of our home. And by using your child's imagination, you can engage even your youngest kids in understanding why caring for your home is so important. Because when kids understand the importance of taking care of their space, they gain a sense of responsibility that stays with them for life.

Give Your Home a Heart: Teaching Kids Empathy

Wondering how to begin getting your kids attention and help them create habits around caring for their belongings and for your home?* It starts with gratitude.* And in a world full of overconsumption, it can be really helpful to start these conversations and instill these practices at a young age.

Help your kids value and appreciate the things they have. Because when they learn to care for their belongings, those items will last longer and be well cared for. This means less need to always be buying new things. Teaching your children to care for their home also instills empathy, as they learn to see their surroundings and possessions as worthy of respect and attention. A great place to start? Help them see the why behind it all and spark their motivation.

Here are some fun and creative ways to get your younger children engaged in activities around your home.

    1. The House with Feelings

Encourage your kids to think about your house having feelings. Ask them questions like, "Where does our home need some extra love today?" This simple question can turn an ordinary task into something they’re excited about.

    Here are some examples:

    • Watering plants in your home so they feel refreshed.

    • Wipe down tables to keep them sparkling and happy.

    • Open and close the curtains everyday to let the sun in and let the house rest at night.

    • Putting laundry away so every drawer is filled up and feels happy.

This not only makes these actions fun but also teaches empathy and care. Connect their

actions with making the home feel more positive, like it has feelings.

    1. Young Managers

Tell your child they’re a manager of the house. Ask them what specific tasks they notice need care in the home that they want to be in charge of. This makes them feel important and responsible. Tell them, "You are the manager of your life now. What would you like to handle on your own?" This could be anything organizing their play area or making sure their scooter is tucked away in the garage at night and not left outside to get rusty. Giving them ownership over these tasks not only makes them feel valued but also teaches them leadership and responsibility.

By using these creative approaches, you can transform everyday actions at home into fun, bonding experiences that teach valuable life skills. Your kids will not only learn to care for their home but also develop a sense of responsibility and pride that will stay with them for life.
