Why Taking Care of the Earth is an Essential Part of Your Child’s Development

Beyond the Self: Teaching Kids About Their Role in the World

How many times have you thought since becoming a parent, “How do I teach my kids how to do this or care about that?”

I’ve thought this sooooo many times as a new mom. Like, we teach them EVERYTHING from how to hold a spoon to how to button a shirt…. And that’s just the small stuff.

What about when it comes to the big things, the intangible things, like why it’s important to care for this beautiful planet that sustains our lives? Where do I even start?

As an adult, I understand the importance of conserving resources like turning off the water after I’m done, switching off the lights in empty rooms, and choosing to recycle and reuse whenever possible. These are habits I know make a difference. I even stopped my car once to confront a man who thoughtlessly threw trash out of his car window. What was he thinking? How could he carelessly do that?

The real question for me was, how could I get my kids to care about these things from the start?

How could I help them grasp that a piece of trash tossed from a car doesn’t just vanish it can travel to places like our oceans, impacting the entire planet? I found myself wondering, what would happen if millions ignored these small responsibilities, like leaving cigarettes on the ground? What world would my children live in? There’s a profound ripple effect from every action we take.

And, like so many times on my parenting journey, I found myself asking this very important question, “If I were the child all over again, how would I want to be taught?”

That’s when it clicked for me ***it’s not just about telling our kids to care for the Earth. It’s about showing them the deeper significance of our everyday habits. ***When I explained to my children that everything in our house comes from the Earth, it helped them grasp how interconnected everything truly is. This understanding inspired them to act from a place of love and care because they knew their actions have an impact on both themselves and the world around them.

Moving a Child From ‘Me’ to ‘We’: Developing Compassion for the Earth

When my children were younger, I framed our conversations in a way that resonated with their hearts.

Here’s how I explained the importance of being mindful about our resources:

    • We’re All Connected: I’d tell them, “Everything around us from the water we drink to the light that brightens our home comes from the Earth and supports us. It’s our job to take care of these gifts in return.”

    • Making It Memorable: I created jingles about turning off lights and not letting the water run because making the teaching fun makes the learning more effective. *Stay tuned for more on that in an upcoming blog! *

And here’s why I explained it:

I knew that for my children to develop happiness, compassion, empathy, and gratitude, they needed to understand how their surroundings support their well-being. ***Teaching them to care for the Earth was crucial for their development. ***It was my job to shift their mindset from seeing the world as revolving around them to understanding that they are part of the world and responsible for its care.

    • **Connecting With Nature: **This wasn’t just about telling them to turn off lights or conserve water. It was about helping them see why these actions are beneficial. I wanted them to understand that we are all connected the sun, the dirt, the rocks, the animals. We all coexist.

    • Respecting Resources: They learned to appreciate how their actions matter. They weren’t just following my orders; they were acting from a place of respect and understanding, recognizing their role in the bigger picture of the world.

And then we focused on our actions speaking as loud as our words:

    • Every Action Counts: I used everyday moments to teach that each small action shows care and respect for our planet. For example, not wasting construction paper during art projects was about creating a mindset that values and preserves the resources our world gives us.

    • Building a Conscious Mindset: This awareness inspired them to continue making choices that positively shaped both their lives and our planet.

Do you have any habits in mind that you’d like your kids to pick up for a more conscious lifestyle at home? Take a moment to think about why these choices really matter and how you can talk about them with your family. It’s all about making those little shifts that add up to big changes.

Everyday Hacks to Anchor the ‘We’ Mindset With Your Family

Here are three simple steps to take to help your family focus on conscious choices. These practices fit right into the Happy Life System, which is all about choosing to live intentionally and align your everyday actions with your deepest values.

**1. Mindful Resource Use Game: **After talking with your children about the why behind making conscious choices, make it a game to see who remembers to bring reusable bags to the store or take their reusable water bottle with them. Celebrate these choices with your family when they happen in that exact moment so that it begins to wire the benefits of conscious choices into the minds of your children.

    2. Declutter and Simplify: Involve your whole family in decluttering. Make this into a game and give each of your kids a space in the house that they’re the leader and manager of. Have them decide which items to keep by explaining the importance of loving or really needing what we have. After decluttering, make a plan together and decide how to donate any items that won’t stay in your home.

**3. Family Consciousness Talks: **Have discussions about the importance of these conscious actions as a family. Explain how small changes can make a big difference. Ask your kids for their ideas about contributing to a conscious family. You’d be surprised at the fun things young children come up with.

When you add these thoughtful habits into your day, you’re doing so much more than just helping the planet; you’re also knitting your family closer together. It’s about showing your kids how their actions make a difference.
