What You Need to Know About Raising Responsible Kids

The Parenting Strategy That Actually Works

Let’s Talk About the Power of Choices

Think about the happy, successful people you know in your life.

I’m talking about those who have achieved goals, both big and small. The people who have really worked towards something that was important to them.

It could be the marathon runners, the musicians who sell out stadiums, or the pastry chefs with lines around the block at their bakeries. It could also be the friend who read three books over the summer, the dad who has journaled every day for a month, or your neighbor who started playing on a volleyball team after wanting to do it for years.

These people? They all have systems in place that helped them achieve these goals. They made countless tiny decisions that turned into bigger actions and they kept moving forward, staying aligned with making their accomplishments happen.

And it might seem crazy, but I’m telling you, the everyday choices your children start making today all add up to get them to achieve their goals, too.

That’s why the Responsibility Pillar in the Happy Life System is so important it’s the foundation for setting your kids up to work towards reaching their goals. So, if you want to empower your kids to make their own decisions and build the confidence, independence, and critical thinking skills they need to thrive, this is a pillar you’ll want to dive into.

Let Your Child Make Decisions: Simple Steps You Can Start Today

The best strategy to get your kids to be responsible? Giving them the space to make choices.

When we give our kids the freedom to make their own decisions, even simple ones, like what to wear or what to order for lunch, we help them rise into their own brilliance. We allow them to access their uniqueness without any agenda and take on their own responsibilities.

And the opposite of responsibility? ***Resentment. ***

If everything is done for your child or they’re always told what to do, they’re going to feel resentful. Imagine if at your job someone just took everything on rather than helping you grow in your role. Or if while you were cooking dinner, someone always told you how to do every step, never giving you a say in how to even boil water or put the dishes away. Constant micromanagement doesn’t lead to fulfillment or motivation. The same goes for your kids.

If you’re looking to start adding more responsibility into the lives of your kids, one of the best ways is to ask them how they want this to happen.

So, I’m going to share with you two questions you can always ask your kids to help focus on responsibility in your home.

Two Questions I Always Turn To When It Comes To Responsibility:

“What can I work on as your role model?”

“Do you feel like I make too many decisions for you?”

Why are these questions so helpful?

    • They open up communication and help you understand where you might be overstepping.

    • When you ask these questions, you create intentional awareness as a parent to think about if you’re doing too much for your child without giving them some freedom.

    • You can take the time to reflect on your parenting approach. Are you giving your kids enough opportunities to make decisions? Are you supporting their growth into responsible individuals? And from there make changes. If what you’re doing isn’t working, you don’t have to stay in that place!

Empowering your kids to make their own decisions is so important if you’re looking to add more responsibility and independence into your home. Start by asking the right questions and allowing your children the freedom to make choices. And when you do this? You're setting them up for success.
